Career Plan

The marketing and public relations fields have always fascinated me because a company or brand must strategically position itself by creating a unique message that differentiates itself from its competitors. Through my coursework, extracurricular activities, and internship experience since the beginning of my college career, I believe that I am well-prepared for a career in the marketing or public relations field. For example, while working as a marketing and communications intern at the Jewish United Fund of Metropolitan Chicago, I learned how the department successfully connects with the large Jewish community in Chicago. By working on one of the department’s largest projects 36 Under 36, I learned about the many important steps it takes to complete a successful marketing and public relations project. The project started months before I began my internship and I was fortunate enough to contribute to the final stages of the project during the summer. In the future, I hope to work on many similar marketing projects with a smaller company after the completion of my college career and eventually work in the marketing department for a larger company.

After completing the Kiersey Temperant Sorter, my temperament most resembles that of a healer. A healer is characterized as an individual that finds a sense of taking on the role of a facilitator of reconciliation. I take pride in helping those that feel excluded and ensure that they feel included. I believe that I fully gained this skill when working as a counselor at a boys’ overnight camp in Wisconsin for four years. As a shy individual that feels nervous in new settings, I was able to relate to many of my campers who were living on their own for the first time in their entire life and had to market camp as a special place where they can grow as individuals. The most significant trait I believe that comes with a healer is that of empathy and this attribute is essential for someone pursuing a career in the marketing and public relations field. Marketing and PR professionals must produce content that relates to their clientele. I believe that I possess strong empathetic skills and can immediately contribute to a marketing or public relations firm by building strong relationships with both my colleagues at work and clients.

If I were not to work in the marketing or public relations fields, an alternative career option that I would find appealing is a sports journalist. Both sports and writing have been lifelong passions of mine and I have pursued this interest as I have written for the sports section of the Muhlenberg Weekly since my Freshman year of college. My extensive knowledge of sports combined with the writing skills that I have developed throughout my college career in both my coursework and sports journalism work with the Muhlenberg Weekly provides me with the necessary experience to pursue a career in sports journalism.
